Looking after your automobile is clearly a very crucial activity, not just for your safety and the protection of your passengers but also to save you the expenditure of costly and avoidable repair costs.

Car upkeep is the responsibility of anybody who drives on a regular basis. No matter how technically able you may be there are certain measures that you can perform to decrease the risks of a poorly maintained vehicle.

Firstly you should always be aware of the condition of your tyres. Worn out tyres or tyres that are dog-eared and cracked must be replaced as soon as possible. As you rely on your tires to grip the road, any decline in their surface can suggest that vehicles might not stop securely in wet conditions or if you have to use your brakes all of a sudden. Have a look at the tires on your vehicle on a regular basis and make sure they are replaced before they start to become dangerous.

One more thing to inspect is your tire pressure and inflate/deflate them in accordance with the recommendations of the manufacturer for the load you are going to bear. If tires are incorrectly inflated this causes a decrease in their ability to hold to the tarmac correctly, which again could result in a grave accident.

Next you should focus on your lights. On many occasions we will start a car trip during the daylight and continue on after it gets dark when we need our lights. If you do not carry out an inspection of your lights before getting into the car you cannot be sure that the lights will be working properly when you require them.

Systematically checking the water and oil levels in your vehicle is one of the simplest things to do however many people do not do it. You should check the levels frequently so that you do not get stuck on a journey (particularly a long journey). Driving your car in dry conditions with a mucky windscreen and no water in your washer is no joke. Driving around with no oil can damage your engine, which could end up costing you a fortune in reparations.

Be certain to check your wiper blades. Over time the effectiveness of wipers deteriorates to the extent that sooner or later the only thing they will do is smear the windscreen when they are being used. This can make it very difficult to see out of your windscreen especially if you are driving in rain. You should replace your wiper blades a minimum of every twelve months so they will clear your windscreen sufficiently.

Of course if you have neither the time, expertise and/or if you are not interested you could always take your car to a reliable mechanic who will be able to carry out all the required maintenance to a high standard for you. Of course this will more than likely cost you money, but you will have the satisfaction that your vehicle has been inspected and tuned by someone who knows what they are doing. In the same vein, be sure to have your car serviced regularly to ensure that your car is safe to drive and your remain safe while you are driving it.

Basic maintenance of your automobile does not have to cost you the earth but it could end up saving your life. Be sure to tend to your car and it will take care of you.
