Owning your own private number plate in the UK is a great asset but there may come a time when you want to sell it – either to buy another plate or to get a good price. However, like selling anything of value you need to be careful whose advice you take on the asking price. Make sure you visit at least three different dealers and get an independent valuation from all three.

However, beware of those dealers who are out to make a sale and win your business and who may just over value your number plate slightly higher than the others in order to achieve their goal. A smart recommendation is that you investigate what the current market trends are regarding the valuing of private number plates. Also, never tell any of the dealers a previous quote that you may have received.

Just like the antique world, there are some unscrupulous dealers in the number plate business so it always pays to do some research of your own so you at least have some idea of the top price you may receive. Of course, most dealers are legitimate and value their reputation highly so it will be in their best interest to treat you fairly. They will be able to draw on their experience and contacts.

Many dealers will also have their own websites that may offer you a guide price when you first apply. These are also great places to check on the value of your number plate. Unfortunately, there is no central authority or official guidelines regarding prices so you are really at the mercy of the current market and the dealer who offers you the best price.

So although there’s no central authority regarding prices, the Cherished Numbers Dealer Association will offer a certificate to delears to prove they are trustworthy and this certificate is often take seriously by professionals such as the HMRC, law and accountancy firms and motor insurance companies. Cherished Numbers Dealer Association valuations start from 50.00.
