Sports cars?

la_ti_da.cheesesticks asked:

I love sports cars, although I really don’t know many.names. I’m meeting up with some friends i haven’t seen in a while and they share my interest. I’d like to be able to impress them with my ‘knowledge’ of some great cars!! but i am talking specific cars, not just a general make…….
Thanks!!!

You could talk to them about the new Ferrari F 430. Second fastest car made by Ferrari (second only to the Enzo) and one of the Cheapest (by comparison, if you considered inflation to the cost of the cars through the 50′ thru 80′s). You could also bring up the new hot car called the Koenigsegg. Check out the website below. It is rumored to be able to smoke everything except the Bugatti Veryon, which is also another sweet car.

A good sports car is a Ford GT.
Another is a Ferrari and a Corvette.

you should stop by the local library or book store and get a book on sports cars. there are some decent ones out there that have a good summary of a lot of different cars and most will include pictures.

No worries! So what I’ll do is just give you some specific topics that are all the buzz in the Sports Car world right now:

1.BMW’s brand new E92 M3. The car improves on the old E46 M3’s inline-6 engine to a V8 that is actually lighter. 0-60 times are under 4.5 seconds. The reason why BMW’s M3 is so great because it marks serious competition to Audi’s RS4, Mercedes-Benz’s E63 AMG and achieves 420 bhp figures without Turbocharging or Supercharging. It also is the first time the M3 has been offered in Coupe, Sport Sedan, and Sport Wagon since the late 90s. The M3 is expected to handle phenomenally due to the low center of gravity, achieved with a carbon-fiber roof.

2.Next, the Porsche 911 Turbo and GT Range. The new 911 GT3 RS (RS = Rennsport) is the race version of the non-turbo 911, it has a wider track and is very lightweight due to carbon fiber materials on the body. The rear spoiler provides massive down force and puts the GT3 RS as the most anticipated street-legal race car in the world. The up-and-coming GT2 and GT2 RS are Turbocharged versions of the GT series, estimated to vastly outpaced the Regular 911 Turbo by 51 bhp and an expected 3.0 second flat 0-60 time. That car will be out in Mid-2008.

3.On the American Front, Roush Racing has produced a 415 bhp Ford Mustang that has upgraded suspension and power upgrades. The overall package vastly exceeds the performance of all Mustangs, including the GT line. The archaic rear 3-link solid-axle suspension is ideal for drag racing, but on a regular track, the Ford is severely inhibited. This has always been a problem with Mustangs, poor handling. Roush Racing upgraded the suspension and now the Mustang is very formidable on all tracks.

4.The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 will no longer be the fastest car in the world. The Koenigsegg CCRX is staged to beat the top speed by using an ethanol fueled engine. The E85 biofuel produces more horsepower than regular gasoline, making the CCXR’s supercharged V8 produce more than 1,100 horsepower. The Koenigsegg is arguably the purest hyper-car. It has no Stability Control, Traction Management or electronic aids. The Car is completely reliant on the driver’s skill, even at high speeds. The Bugatti is loaded with technology like Stability Control, All-Wheel Drive, Launch Control, and advanced Variable Turbine Turbocharging.

I gave you some starters. These are really specific. Your best bet is to stick to Porsche and BMW; they are clearly identified as Sports Cars. Mercedes-Benz is a matter of opinion. Many contend that Mercedes-Benz is not aggressive (in handling) enough to be considered a pure Sports Car, despite the amazing AMG Division. The same goes for Audi who is still trying to get over the High-Priced-Volkswagen stigma; however the S4 and RS4 are excellent cars.

I left Japanese Cars off the list because there is only one comparable Sports Car in all of Japan: the Lexus IS-F and it’s not even out until October. Unfortunately tuner cars don’t really count and even the Mustang mentioned above is questionable. The stock Mustang, as it stands, it not competition to any German Car, but the Roush Racing version is very impressive. I tried to be balanced. I hope this help.
